Happy Halloween!

I love Halloween.  When I was little girl, I loved dressing up as a princess, bride, 50’s girl, fairy, genie… anything girly where I could load on the blush.

Every year, like all other children, I would trick or treat and collect as much candy as I could.  I’d end up with a pillowcase full of candy and I would eat myself sick for days.  I knew from a young age that I wasn’t supposed to eat a lot of candy, so every mini Snickers bar was followed with a pang of guilt.  I’d try to stop eating them.  Just one more I promised myself, but nothing could stop me from eating piece after piece except extreme nausea.

Even as an adult, I can relate to this obsession with Halloween candy, it just feels so exciting! The one time we can eat loads of sugar and have it be socially acceptable.  I know that if Marshall was bringing home a huge bag of candy, that I would be sneaking into his stash and stealing all of the Kit Kats and York Peppermint Patties.  Oh, and the Butterfingers too.  The best!

But nothing feels worse than the physical hangover we get from days of binging on sugar, paired with the emotional guilt that we let ourselves go off the rails… again.  So I want to give you a quick Halloween Candy Survival Guide:

I say on Halloween, go wild.  It’s one frickin’ day.  Eat as much as you want, BUT, this is a big but, know that you are going to feel like you gained ten pounds, you may break out, get a migraine and you WILL be addicted to sugar for the next few days.  So being around the pastry case at the cafe you frequent is going to be super hard.  It’s pure biology, once our brain gets a flood of sugar, we naturally get addicted to the high.  But if you’re cool with all of that, and you know it’s coming, go for it.

Enjoy it!  Taste it, let it melt in your mouth, see if you actually like it.  I thought I was obsessed with Crunch Bars for a while, but then I realized that the chocolate is NASTY. Way too sweet and doesn’t actually taste like chocolate at all.  So now I don’t eat them.

Remember, you can buy Halloween candy anytime. Part of the addiction to this holiday is the candy feels rare so we HAVE TO HAVE IT NOW and naturally eat it like it’s the last meal we’ll ever have.  When I feel myself going overboard I tell myself, “Sarah, take a break, if you want more candy you can go buy some tomorrow at CVS, for like, 3 dollars.”

Throw it out.  Again, if you want more, go buy some!  If you have to go to the store to get some, which is totally ok, it will make you think twice.

Drink lots of water. It will help with the hangover.

In the comments below, I want to know, what’s the candy you’re going to really enjoy eating tomorrow and what’s your Halloween survival strategy?

Happy Halloween!

Sarah
