Dear Mother

Dear Mothers,

You deserve to

Be cooked dinner

Have your feet rubbed

Go to yoga whenever you want

Buy a new wardrobe

Go on vacation that doesn’t involve work

Take off on a random Saturday

Get help with the laundry

Have time to connect with your soul

Be brought breakfast in bed

Read on the couch for an hour

Actually finish your coffee without needing to microwave it 5 times

Shower alone

Pee alone

Go to a museum and look at art all day

Go on a date

See the world

Get your nails done

Spend money on yourself

Have a hobby

Feel sexy

Feel beautiful

Feel like a whole woman

Not just this week because it’s Mother’s Day, but every week. And not because you work hard, but because you’re a woman, and you deserve this just because you exist.

You can be a wonderful Mom and have space for yourself.  Maybe not every day, and maybe not all the time, but stretch yourself, it’s possible for you.

    Of course we deserve all these things! However, I feel like a lot of these ideas are unrealistic. Most of them require either money or someone else. I totally agree that we need to take care of ourselves, but what about those of us who don’t have the luxury of having extra money or someone willing to do those things for us? What is an appropriate balance between dreaming and reality? I see a list like this and get discouraged because I know that things like buying a new wardrobe or taking a vacation or having someone cook or clean for me is just not realistic. I would like to see more posts with ideas that everyone can do, regardless of money or someone else’s choices.

      Thank you for writing. I am sorry to hear you feel discouraged. I get it- sometimes things even like self-care seem so out of reach- whether they cost money or not. A good place to begin is by connecting with yourself. Pick something that would feel so good to you. Try a warm bath, journaling, dancing in your kitchen, or a really beautiful night’s sleep. When you do that one thing, treat it like a decadent gift to yourself. What small step can you take towards nourishing yourself? Hope this inspires you!
