“So is Jesus like a man Priestess?”

Blog

I opened up the cylindrical package with disproportionate joy and anticipation. Dancing excitedly while I pulled out two large prints.

We had just moved into my Temple, The Moon Lodge, which sits on our property outside of Boston, while our home was being renovated.

I was so excited to give the Temple a zhuzh and make it feel homey for our family, and I had ordered two prints, one of Jesus, one of Mary Magdalene from Autumn Skye. I pulled them out and showed my then 4-year-old daughter.

“Who’s that?”

“This is Jesus”

“Who’s Jesus?”

(We had taught her about Jesus, but you know, kids forget.)

“Jesus was a spiritual teacher, and taught a lot of people about how to be in relationship with God, and how to love everyone.”

“So Jesus was like a man Priestess??”

I died. My work here is complete.

“Yes love, he was like a man Priestess.”

Fast forward 2 years to my daughter’s 6th birthday, her whole kindergarten class was over for a “sleep under” (like a sleepover but the kids leave before bed). We had just made magic wands, watched Wish, and managed to keep everyone alive.

As Hazel was opening presents, a little boy looked up at the print of Jesus on our wall, “Who’s that?”

“That’s Jesus,” I answered.

“Oh, I didn’t know Jesus had dark skin?”

“He did” I replied matter of factly.

“Oh!” He said excitedly

“And is that Jesus’s Mom?”

“No, that’s Jesus’s Wife, Mary Magdalene.”

“Oh, I didn’t know Jesus had a wife!” He said with the same glee as if he were discovering hidden treasure.

“He did!” I responded to match his joy.

“And why is she holding a baby?”

“That’s their Daughter, Sarah.”

“I didn’t know Jesus had a baby!?”

“He did!”

(Obviously, a lot of people disagree with this particular family constellation, but it is now widely accepted through the research of the Gnostic Gospels, Ancient Sumerian Texts, and the recent recovery of the book of Mary Magdalene, that they were married and had a daughter. Please feel free to do your own research & draw your own conclusions tra la.)

And then out of nowhere, Hazel says, “Jesus and Mary Magdalene were Priestesses.”

Nailed it, Hazel. Nailed it.

We live in a house where Jesus is a man of color and Jewish, he’s married and a Dad, he taught people to have a direct connection with God, is the son of a powerful Priestess and married to a powerful Priestess, he was one of many great spiritual teachers throughout the ages, and spiritual leaders are primarily women.

Can you just feel what this does for my kids? What they will grow up with as a blueprint for a relationship with the divine? With relationships? With power?

Can you imagine what this would’ve done for you if you grew up with this story?

Our spiritual characters play a big role in our belief systems. Metaphor is the language of the Soul, and our beliefs are formed by metaphor and by stories.

Why do you think the oppressive Patriarchy completely changed Jesus’s identity to be a single white man, who’s the son of a meak, quiet virgin, and the only son of God who had a brief run-in with Mary Magdalene the whore? What’s that teaching us? It’s literally brainwashing us to see ourselves and the world differently.

And if you went to Church, you never questioned it, no one hardly does. It’s all we knew because they successfully erased the Sacred Feminine from our collective story.

Now here’s the thing, I don’t beat this stuff into my kids, I don’t have to. It’s subtle and doesn’t take a lot. I just have sacred art up in the home, I speak plainly about what I believe, I don’t hide it from people outside our family, I take dedicated time around the holidays to sit with them & teach them what I know.

If you want a guide around how to weave this into your family over the holidays, I have an amazing free resource, The Sacred Holiday Collection.

If you’re feeling a touch of overwhelm, here’s the thing: Home Sunday Schooling my kids (as we call it) doesn’t take a ton of time. The majority of the work comes from me teaching myself about the Sacred Feminine, and embodying it fully, so when I bring it to them, it’s effortless.

You are a spiritual center of your family. Tend to the hearth ♥️.

Love,

Sarah
